A trooper spotted damage to Moore's rig that was consistent with witnesses' descriptions, Martin said. The Tuesday crash occurred when Moore allegedly sideswiped another westbound tractortrailer on I40/75, said THP Lt. Jessie Brooks. "Apparently, they made contact, forcing one truck into the retaining wall," Brooks said. "The guy stopped, saw what kind of a mess he'd caused and got back in and drove off." The rig carrying salt "was fully engulfed in flames," said Brooks, and closed all lanes of the interstate in both directions for more than an hour. The driver of the burning rig was able to escape the wreckage, but he suffered severe burns, Brooks said. The unidentified driver was flown to Vanderbilt Burn Center in Nashville, where he was listed Wednesday in critical condition. Brandon Tiner, age unavailable, was listed in critical condition at the University of Tennessee Medical Center on Wednesday. His passenger, Melissa Piet, age unavailable, was listed in stable condition. Both are from Richmond, Va. I'll get a lot of flak for writing this, but a huge percentage of big rig drivers have zero respect for the other vehicles on the road, and yes I know that most drivers have zero respect for anyone else, but they're not behind the wheel of a gigantic truck. I've lived in Knoxville for a few years and one of the first things I noticed on the freeway when I moved here, was how the big rigs fly through Knoxville with no regard for the speed limit, and they bully the other drivers who have the misfortune of getting in their way. I can't blame them completely though, because truckers know where they can get away with speeding and obviously it's universally known that the law in Knoxville will turn a blind eye to it. If not, why don't I EVER see them pulled over getting the ticket(s) they deserve? wow it's amazing the total lack of respect for a respectable job. sure there are some bad, law breaking truckers and some who respect the law. driving a truck is not as easy as many of you think. driving 11 hours straight everyday thru rain snow ice heat twisters hurricanes to keep every town, city state stocked with food gas cars clothes bricks water milk etc etc everything is moved by truck instead of bashing the trucking industry how about saying thank you mister truck driver or misses truck driver thank you for being away from your family so i can go to the walmart and get the corned beef i want for dinner. thank you misses truck driver for getting that gas to the pilot so i can fuel my suv thank you mister truck driver for bringing these egg mc muffins to mcdonalds my breakfast was great. we do it all WITHOUT TRUCKS AMERICA STOPS I'll get a lot of flak for writing this, but a huge percentage of big rig drivers have zero respect for the other vehicles on the road, and yes I know that most drivers have zero respect for anyone else, but they're not behind the wheel of a gigantic truck. I worked for the trucking company with tan trucks that used to be everywhere but now runs most of its freight on rail. Anyhow, if you knew what is going on in the cabs of most overtheroad trucks you would be frightened to death to get on the highway. The turnover at trucking companies is HUGE. Why? Truck drivers are a fickle lot. It tends to attract people who want to be left alone, but oddly think a lot of themselves. It isn't rocket science to drive a truck (pick up load, drive to delivery, drop off load). The modern trucks are easy to drive and many long range drivers don't even have to back their trucks up anymore. It's a lowestcommon denominator job and that denominator is usually "breathing." When a main line carrier fires a driver for being stupid, reckless, criminal, drug addicted, panderer, thief, and/or lazy, that driver doesn't get out of the business. Nope. That driver goes to another company and says "Well, you know how those guys at X Freightlines are." Sign on the dotted line and gets behind the wheel of the truck and proceeds to be stupid, reckless, panderer, thief, drug addicted and/or lazy. The drugs part scares me the most. Next time you are at a Pilot try to figure out who the hot freight West Coast bound drivers or bull haulers (cattle trucks) are. How do you tell? That's the guy so banged up on meth or bennys that it looks like he's about to explode. I had a driver leave Charlotte, NC bound for Long Beach, CA who called 42 HOURS LATER wanting a load back to the East Coast. I had him deadhead an empty back to the main office, then fired him when he got back there, 44 HOURS LATER. Do the math. That's means that if he took the required hours off, he would have had to drive 88 miles an hour or he didn't sleep and averaged 55 mph. Be afraid of trucks folks. Be very afraid.
